Black Women and their Reactions to Slavery
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page analysis of the impact wielded by the institution of slavery on African Americans. African American women, in particular, had a tremendously varied reaction to slavery. These reactions varied from complete passivity, to outright violence, to societal action. This paper analyzes the stories related in Celia, a Slave: A True Story, Sojourner Truth : A Life, a Symbol and A Black Woman's Civil War Memoirs to emphasize that some reactions were obviously more effective than others in bringing about positive change. These reactions were shaped not only by the institution of slavery, however, but by the individual circumstances and experiences of individual women and those with whom she interacted.
