Black Equality: Reconstruction to the Present

An 8 page assessment of the struggle for black equality. Tracing key historical developments, the
author demonstrates that the Civil Rights Movement only succeeded in propelling blacks to the same level they had briefly attained in the 1870�s, a
position of at least semi-equality. The opinions as to the extent of true equality in our country today, however, vary radically. Many blacks
point to such phenomena as police brutality and racial profiling as evidence that equality has yet to be achieved. These same blacks seem to have
limited faith in our government's insuring this equality. At the same time, however, many are working within the system to do just that.

The black experience in the United States is one which has been affected by a mindset of superiority of those that first bound them into slavery, by the societal segregation which haunted them for years after the end of the Civil War, and by numerous legislative attempts to make up for past wrongs. These attempts centered of course around the Civil Rights movement and friction between blacks and whites which continue to exist to this day. This paper presents the events which occurred throughout history from the perspective of its impact on the life of a fictional family of blacks who lived from the time of slavery to the present.

Settlement houses were designed to enable people living in poverty to have access to support and help no matter what their ethnicity, religious beliefs, or other differences that may be discriminated against in other areas of society. Lasch-Quinn addresses the issue form a unique perspective and allows the reader to see another viewpoint, a viewpoint that goes beyond the surface to the subtle realities of the settlement houses. Black Political Groups in the Early 20th Century

party as they sought to change the standing of the black community in the early part of the
century. Two of the organizations were highly successful and remain in operation today.
The fact that two of these four movements and organizations no longer exist is less
amazing than the fact that two of them still do. Nearly a century after their founding, the
NAACP and the NUL continue to pursue largely the same goals as those on which they
