Scared Straight
[ send me this paper ]
7 pages in length. Battling the criminal element has been an ongoing and increasingly difficult objective since man's first presence was recorded. Deviant behavior in human beings is hard-wired into the species' psyche; when coupled with such additional elements as negative environmental influence, the prevalence for criminal behavior accounts for significant occurrence even in a civilized society. To catch such behavior at the earliest point and restructure the thinking process of a young perpetrator is the fundamental approach of such shock programs as Scared Straight, a high-profile tertiary approach to prevention that engages violent youth in brief encounters with inmates who describe "the brutality of prison life or short-term incarceration in prisons or jails" (The Department of Health and Human Services, 2001) with the expectation of shocking - and thereby deterring - adolescents from committing crimes. While a program such as this has all the markings of a successful outcome and lower recidivism rates, statistics have illustrated how such hard-core approaches may actually increase criminal behavior instead of prevent it. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

School Resource Officer
[ send me this paper ]
8 pages in length. The escalating presence of violence in today's schools has necessitated a unique yet wholly functional approach to counterbalancing this dangerous phenomenon. While some schools employ the limited protection of, for example, metal detection devices, others are utilizing the benefits of School Resource Officers (SROs), who occupy three specific and very important roles pertaining to law enforcement, counseling and teaching. The driving force behind implementing such a program is for law enforcement to have a hands-on involvement in structuring and educating students' perspectives of civilized behavior. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Sentencing of Juvenile Criminal as Adults
[ send me this paper ]
( 5 pp) Sentencing youth to incarceration can never
be the sole solution to delinquency and crime.
However, public fears about juvenile delinquency
and crime have escalated in recent years, boosted
in part by a handful of headline-grabbing incidents
that foster stereotypes of young people as out of
control. It is not as though these incidents do
not happen, sadly they do. However, the doubt
which it engenders in society's mind concerning
its youth is equally damaging. One proposed
solution is to sentence and incarcerate juveniles
as adults. Bibliography lists 8 sources.
