Jay Cooke (1821-1905)

A 12 page paper. Jay Cooke is generally credited as being the "first major investment banker, creator of the first "wire house," and the Financier of the Civil War (Trumbore 2000). Had it not been for Cooke, the Union would have had a far more difficult time financing the war. This essay talks about Jay Cooke, the man, and Jay Cooke, the financier. His training was early and at age 18, he began work with a major trading company. This paper reports and discusses Cooke's entrance into banking and finance, his innovative marketing campaign that resulted in selling war bonds to the public instead of only to wealthy bankers, his door-to-door and other campaigns, his venture in the railroad and finally, the collapse of his company. Jefferson & Contradictions

A 3 page research paper/essay that examines the contradictory nature of Thomas Jefferson's legacy. Jefferson, American Founding Father who penned some of the most inspirational words ever written regarding principles of liberty and freedom in the Declaration of Independence, was also a Southern slave-owner, who failed to address the dichotomies of the Constitution in regards to equality for everyone, including women. These facts are contradictory and modern historians and commentators have sought to reconcile them. One way in which this can be done is to conceptualize Jefferson as the embodiment of a quintessential American trait, which is to be contradictory in deeply-held beliefs. Examination of this trait stems from the fact that American policy, since Jefferson, has operated on two distinctly different levels: the first being the level of ideals and the second being the level of politics. John Adams, Second President Of The United States

This section discusses some of Adams' remarkable history and the leadership qualities for which he is being nominated. The last part of this section ranks ten attributes of leadership as they pertain to Adams with examples demonstrating each characteristic. The second section of this paper is an essay about Adams that includes further examples of his leadership, some of his attributes that were no included in the nomination document and why, and what the writer might have done differently with the XYZ event. Both sections identify Adams' leadership styles and how these were demonstrated. Adams has been called the unsung hero and the forgotten hero in the founding of this nation. John Ledyard (1751-1789)

(5 pp) John Ledyard (1751-1789) was one of the
first great American explorers. He accompanied
Cook's third expedition as a sailor, and so visited
the Pacific, the Northwest Coast, Alaska, and
Hawaii, where he was one of the oarsmen in the
boat that took Cook ashore for the parley at which
he was murdered. After the American Revolution, at
the behest of Thomas Jefferson (then U.S. minister
in Paris), Ledyard attempted to cross over to
America by traversing Russia, only to be arrested
and expelled from the country.

Lefkowitz/Washington's Aides-De-Camp

A 5 page book review that addresses Arthur Lefkowitz 2003 text George Washington's Indispensable Men. This book argues that the immense role that General Washington played in winning the American Revolution was greatly facilitated by the 32 men who served as his aides-de-camp during the course of the war. Washington's aides helped him with the mountain of correspondence that his position entailed. However, Lefkowitz argues that the relationship between Washington and his aids was deeper and more profound and that these highly intelligent and responsible men also helped as behind-the-scene advisors. Lefkowitz makes his point very well, but provides sketchier proof on his second thematic point in describing Washington's relationship with his aides. No additional sources cited.
