Race, Politics and National Structures
[ send me this paper ]
A 7 page paper discussing the origins of racism and its effects in politics. Despite federal laws disallowing it, the realities of today’s living arrangements is that, in cities, Blacks and whites still are separated by political boundaries, as surely as they were separated in the years surrounding the Civil War. The overrepresentation of Black individuals in the inner city is no accident. Neither was it by design, but the effects are the same as if it had been. Political systems help to marginalize African Americans, and then work to preserve the status quo they have created. Bibliography lists 11 sources.

Recovery Process/Mississippi & New Orleans
[ send me this paper ]
A 20 page research paper that discusses the recovery of the Gulf Coast in the aftermath of the 2005 Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Two weeks after Katrina, President Bush stood in Jackson Square in New Orleans and promised that the federal government would do “’what it takes’” to rebuild the Gulf Coast region (Brush). Since that time, he has frequently referred to the $110 billion that Congress has committed to this endeavor. However, only a small portion of these funds have actually reached Katrina victims and rebuilding is extremely slow, with many of the areas of devastation unchanged. The reasons for this are diverse and are affected by political and economic factors. This analysis examines these factors, with particular focus on the gaming economy of Mississippi’s Gulf Coast. Bibliography lists 16 sources.

Review and Analysis of Jonathan Kozol’s “Amazing Grace: The Lives of Children and the Conscience of a Nation”
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 6 page paper reviewing and analyzing Kozol’s 1995 book “Amazing Grace: The Lives of Children and the Conscience of a Nation”. Jonathan Kozol’s 1995 book “Amazing Grace: The Lives of Children and the Conscience of a Nation” tells the story of the lives and living conditions of families in the South Bronx, New York neighborhood of Mott Haven. Kozol believes that not only is this neighborhood one of the most impoverished and dangerous in New York but probably within the entire United States. The book is done quite often in first person narrative as the author had visited the neighborhood several times throughout the research process of the text and interviewed a number of the residents. He not only interviews the residents to document his findings but also reveals several of his own feelings which helps generate an additional impact to the plight of the situation for the reader. Critics view his work as incomplete however as he ignores several of the positive and progressive projects which have been undertaken in the area to improve situations.
Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Review of "Fair Share or Status Quo? The Twin Cities Livable Communities Act"
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page paper discussing this article by Edward Goetz. This article
is presented as being the report of "research," but its greatest value is in demonstrating when
research is not research at all. The article attempts to make broad generalizations without taking
broad categories into account. Using metropolitan housing as its focus, it examines
microeconomic conditions before and after wrenching changes in macroeconomic and national
changes in the decade of the 1970s, a time of double-digit inflation, wage and price controls and
eventually credit controls. In essence, it compares apples and oranges, concluding insight
measured in pears. Its greatest value lies in demonstrating how not to write a research article.
