Fred Fiedlers Comprehensive Contingency Model: Applications in Sports, Ethics, Social Responsibility, and Everyday Life
[ send me this paper ]
A 7 page discussion of Fiedlers contingency model of leadership, a model which postulates that leadership effectiveness is based on situational contingency, i.e. that in order to be most effective the situation had to be favorable to the leadership style being utilized. The author contests some writers interpretation that Fiedler is contending that the leader himself cannot change. This criticism is unjust in may respects. Fiedlers model recognizes, of course, that not all situations will be favorable and either the situation or the leadership style must be changed in order to correspond with one another. To Jackson, coaching basketball was not solely about winning; rather, he achieved such a winning record by teaching his players the more important aspects of life. Jackson's entire coaching philosophy revolved around the importance of finding beauty, selflessness and transcendence within one's overall existence; whether the task at hand is menial or monumental, Jackson coached his team in the art basketball and the art of life.
