Influence of Geography on History and Development

This is a 5 page paper discussing geography�s influence on history. Geography has a great impact on history, development, and social, cultural, religious and political affiliations. Historically, regions with geographical advantageous positions, such as those with access to navigable waterways have led other areas in regards to exploration, market economy and development. Geographically, Britain provides an excellent example of the advantages of a land with fertile soil, navigable waterways and a long coastline with natural harbors. This led England to exploration and navigation which in turn led them to other lands which they could develop. Other regions with water access also gained a great deal in trade and exploration. New lands which were developed were also those which were easily accessible, had irritable soil, and navigable waterways. Lands which did not have these geographically preferred features were largely neglected unless they were geophysically blessed with natural resources such as oil or gold. Today geography still plays an essential influence on the historical affiliations of many peoples who despite political, religious or international alliances are still mostly affected with their geographical locale. A 5 page paper discussing the similarities and differences between Vogt's "Decline of Rome" and Cahill's "How the Irish Saved Civilization." In many ways, these works describe differing pictures of loyalty - one to a system in which people lived; the other to a system in which people no longer needed to live. They also are both about transition. The Roman empire had fallen into an irreversible, inexorable slide about which it appeared nothing could be done. Neither could the Europe resulting from Rome's eventual fall do anything about the state in which it found itself, but Cahill credits Irish monks with ultimately saving Western civilization by recording Rome's history while also interjecting their own values. A 5 page paper assessing this book. Constantine represents a turning point for the Roman Empire on all fronts, but he is most remembered as being the first Roman ruler to convert to Christianity. The book's author reveals that Constantine's growth in the Christian faith was a slow and arduous process; he appears to have struggled with the problem of ego throughout his entire adult life. Smith also reveals much of Constantine's humanity as well as his apparent beliefs that he should be counted among the Apostles. This is a 5 page paper discussing Jacob Burckhardt�s �The Fall of the Humanists in the Sixteenth Century�. Jacob Burckhardt�s writings on �The Fall of the Humanists in the Sixteenth Century� in part III of his work �The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy� discusses how the humanist movement away from the affiliation between the church and the state back toward the traditional positive views of man introduced by the ancient Greeks and Romans offered a progressive and excessive view of society which was eventually not well accepted and which led to the downfall of the humanists. While Burckhardt generally did not believe that accelerated movements in history were good for society, other modern scholars and critics believe that this perspective of Burckhardt�s may actually have been a reflection of the excesses he was witnessing in 19th century Europe. While those who believed in the importance of the functioning of the church and the state supported Burckhardt�s views, others advocated that the humanist movement actually developed a sense of liberalism and the equality of man considered an essential element in today�s democratic societies.
