Marriage as a Social Problem
[ send me this paper ]
This 5 page report discusses the ways in which marriage is a social problem in the modern world. To even consider marriage in the context of being a social problem goes against the majority of traditional frames of reference. However, if one is willing to suspend such a mindset, even for a brief period, it becomes possible to consider the ways in which the institution of marriage can be seen as something which actually has a number of negative characteristics that work against it. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Mars and Venus - Old News
[ send me this paper ]
(5 pp) This discussion examines John Gray's 1992 best seller, Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus: A Practical Guide for Improving Communication and Getting What You Want in Your Relationships. In light of the new century the book, has not aged well. Although it may have broken much ground in advancing the need to discuss differences in gender communications, the reduction of communication skills to simplistic solutions, which often seem prone to the author's perceptions of how it 'should' be, no longer have the power that kept the book on the New York Times bestseller list for 92 weeks. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Marx, Economics, and Feminism
[ send me this paper ]
This 9 page report discusses Karl Marxs fundamental assertion, in the most simple of terms, was that all events are determined by economic forces and how that can be applied to the precepts and discourses of feminism. The connection between feminism, Marxism and capitalism becomes very clear when one considers how both Marxism and feminism are determined to succeed in revealing the secret of the world and showing the oppressive nature that the system creates for both women and men. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Mary Shelleys Original Frankenstein and the Social Construction of Gender:
[ send me this paper ]
This 5 page report discusses Mary Wollstonecraft Shelleys (1797-1851) Frankenstein and the ways in which serves as a metaphor for the social realities regarding gender in the early 19th century. The premise is that women are rejected in their efforts to be whole as surely as the monster was. In fact, the circumstances of the early 19th century would appear to people of the early 21st century to have been more disturbing than what was faced by Dr. Victor Frankensteins hapless creature. Bibliography lists only the primary source.

Mary Todd Lincoln
[ send me this paper ]
3 pages in length. Considered to be one of the most colorful -- if not misunderstood -- of all presidential first ladies, Mary Todd Lincoln stood tall for what she believed and ended up paying a high price throughout her entire life for her outspoken and opinionated manner. Indeed, she was instrumental in implementing much positive growth within the country's infrastructure, such as bringing to light the atrocity of slavery, however, she was not that well received from her husband's political constituency on account of her sometimes erratic behavior. Still, it can be argued that Mary Todd Lincoln helped considerably when it came to establishing the United States of America as it exists in contemporary times. The writer discusses the various aspects of the first lady's life. Annotated bibliography lists 10 sources.

Mary Wilkins Freeman
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. Feminist and ghost story writer Mary Wilkins Freeman, a child of poverty, grew up surrounded by the overwhelming sense of failure that permeated from her long-suffering father, whose bouts with depression brought on by harrowing Civil War episodes only exacerbated his inability to sustain his family's needs. Ever resourceful, Mary did her best to alleviate the pressure at home by painting and teaching, however, the "family's economic decline" (McFadden, 2000) was in such a fierce downward spiral that even her best attempts were far too inadequate. Writing became her economic mainstay, and she began earning money for her literary efforts as early as 1881; still, this was not to be a help to her destitute family, all of who died during the following two years. Bibliography lists 2 sources.
