A Paradox of Democracy: Inequality Despite Law

A 5 page review of the work of one of the most effective black writers of the twentieth century. A collection of a variety of Davis' most important essays, the book serves as a much needed compendium of the work of this tremendously important black author. Starting with an examination of the debates which encompassed black literary circles of the 1960s and 1970s, Davis compares the perspectives of a variety of different writers and academics before turning his attention specifically to the black slave narratives and then to Ralph Ellison, James Baldwin, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Jean Toomer, Robert Hayden, and other key figures in black history. The most interesting aspect of this book by far, however, is Davis' attention to the slave narrative as a critical component of black written history. No additional sources are listed.

Contends that the subject of race relations is a key philosophical issue precipitated in the United States largely by the presence of African Americans. It is an issue which has been broached by many black leaders of our past, and indeed the leaders of today and our future. Cornel West is one of those leaders. He is, in fact, one of the most eloquent and influential black writers of contemporary times. West views white America as an oppressor of black America, an oppressor which operates through daily attacks on black attributes such as intelligence, beauty, ability, and character. Central to this racial bias is economics and the capitalist system which emphasizes individuality over community and competition over cooperation. No additional sources are listed.

A Review of W.E.B. DuBois' "The Souls of Black Folks"

A 5 page discussion of the cultural environment in which "The Souls of Black Folk" was written and the message which the author sought to convey. Contends that the general public at this time was not very tolerant of blacks in general and W.E.B. DuBois was not only black, he had an impressive education and was considerably influential. Ironically, these same qualities somewhat alienated W.E.B. DuBois even from some of his own people. Even in this historical context, however, "The Souls of Black Folks" was regarded as a beautiful insight into the African American culture. No additional sources are listed.

The author contends that the sociocultural region we know as the �Old South� is formed much more around common ideologies than it is any specific state boundaries. Abraham Lincoln: Overcoming Political and Social Obstacles in Order to Preserve the Union and Eliminate Slavery

This is a 4 page paper discussing the political and social obstacles Lincoln had to overcome to achieve his goals. After President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on April 16, 1865, writer Stephen Oates in his book �Abraham Lincoln: The Man Behind the Myths� (1984) said that Lincoln became symbolic to �ministers across the North [who] portrayed the slain President as an American Christ who died to expiate the sins of his guilty land�. While this statement reflects the enormity of the legend for freedom and unity Lincoln would become, his political career was one of controversy as his personal goals to preserve the Union and eliminate slavery were not necessarily popular notions in his day. In fact, many accused him of working against the U.S. Constitution in many of his statements and policies. In addition to the political obstacles he had to overcome, writings from the time also indicate that socially many still regarded him as a third-class citizen within a first-class position; adding to the controversy of his decisions and his ultimate dedication to the preservation of the Union throughout the Civil War and his issuing of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 declaring all slaves were free forever. Despite these obstacles, Lincoln managed to persuade the northern Republicans and Democrats to back his desires for the elimination of slavery in the south while using the tide of controversy from the publication of Harriet Beecher Stowe�s �Uncle Tom�s Cabin� and his public speech at the military cemetery at Gettysburg had a great impact on the national notions and approach to freedom and civil equality.
